As well as its entry into many important industries at the global and local level, such as starch, glucose, yeast and specialty oils, and some developed countries have begun to use it as a source of bioenergy in the form of ethanol.
Sorghum is an important summer grain crop after rice and maize. The Arab Republic of Egypt is considered the first producer of sorghum in the unit area on all the producing countries in the world, and most of its cultivation is concentrated in Upper Egypt, where it is grown in large areas each year reaching 400 thousand feddans.
About 80% of this area is concentrated in the governorates of Fayoum, Assiut and Sohag. The cultivated area of sorghum was 376 thousand feddans in 2000 with an average productivity of 17.5 Ardab / feddans and a total production of 6.6 million Ardab.
The importance of sorghum as grain is important because it is a human food crop especially in rural communities and has recently contributed mainly to the animal and poultry feed industry.
